Going to a new school is difficult, especially in middle school. You meet many new people and teachers, have to follow a new schedule, and there are brand new rules to follow.
According to Claire McCarthy, MD, with Harvard Health Publishing, “Middle school can be challenging for many students. It’s tougher academically than elementary school, with more work and higher expectations. Even just changing classes, which for most students starts in middle school, can be stressful. It can be challenging socially, as students try to find friends and community amidst what can be very tough peer pressure.”
Two seventh graders new to Yukon Middle School were interviewed about their experience so far to obtain information about this tough switchover.
Amelia Mathai and Karter Cain both gave their best answers when asked. Both Karter and Amelia have had a positive time up to this point at YMS. They enjoy classes with their teachers and find middle school fun, even if it is slightly overwhelming sometimes.
The two expressed that they had a pretty stressful time on the first day and that the maps they were given were not too helpful in knowing where to go. Amelia suggested maps on the walls, and Karter suggested new maps that are clearer in direction. The lengthening of passing periods was also a request from them as well as many other 7th grade students.
Math is a favorite class for both students, with it being Amelia’s easiest subject. Karter is fond of Mr. Innis’ classroom’s lighting and believes he teaches well.
Karter and Amelia both chose three words they would use to describe YMS. Karter’s picks were “entertaining,” “fun,” and “caring.” Amelia used the words “creative,” “fun,” and “different.” The one word in common was “fun.” Let’s keep it that way! 8th graders, what advice do you have here for the new kids here?
