Have you ever wondered who the lady yelling to do more pull-ups? Well, that there is the infamous Coach Martin. She is a powerhouse that has been a part of Yukon Middle School for over 20 years. Martin has not only been the strength and conditioning coach here, she’s served as the head coach for the girls teams of cross country, basketball, and track. She has always been very involved with the students here and has always been willing to give a helping hand, accompanied with a “do better” speech of course. If you’re wondering where she’s gone, she’s was deployed late September this year to serve oversees hopefully until the spring of next year.
Daxton Kesse is one of many whose stepped up to take a part of Coach Martins duties, as he is now over girls strength and conditioning classes. We interviewed him to get a little insight on his experience.
“When I first took over Martin’s role it was difficult to fill her shoes, eventually I got my footing and the girls got used to me being around for the most part,” said Kesse.
While he expressed that he received a lot a pushback from the girls at first, he understands how difficult it can be for students to adjust to someone new after such an impactful instructor.
“Lots of the girls have talked to me about how they miss having her [Martin] around and miss how funny she is,” Coach K added.
Both students and teachers feel that her deployment has been a hard transition, so the school has decided to do something to give back to her for a change. Right now, YMS is creating Coach Martin a care basket to show how much we appreciate her amazing involvement over the years.
