This tale will change your life! Wicked is an inspiring and honest story created in many forms. This extraordinary tale started as a book, then it became a musical, and recently, a movie. Written originally by Gregory Maguire, the story dives deep into a reimagination of the time before The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’s telling. It’s a fantastical mediation on good and evil, following the story of Elphaba, a misunderstood, green-skinned girl who eventually becomes the famed Wicked Witch of the West, and her seemingly unlikely friendship with the popular, blonde Galinda, the future Good Witch of the South. The book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, took place in the fictional Land of Oz. Released in 1995, many people were lining up to get the book. The numbers went out of this world, defying gravity as more than 5 million copies of the book have been sold. Maguire, the author, wrote this book because he wanted readers to “uphold our morals.” This message can be seen throughout the main characters. The Broadway stage musical by librettist Winnie Holzman and composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz follows this story as well, but with a catchy, colorful twist. Coming to Broadway in 2003, the musical was met with eager acclaim and continues to be a favorite amongst fans of musicals. The movie Wicked, produced by Universal, was finally released around Thanksgiving 2024. Fans of the book and musical were ecstatic for the movie, preparing in many ways. The motion picture directed by Jon M. Chu featured both British actress and singer, Cynthia Erivo, and American singer-songwriter and actress, Ariana Grande. They shared an incredible bond throughout filming at Sky Studios Elstree, just outside of London. If a magical story where complete opposites become an unbreakable bond sounds intriguing, Wicked is definitely the way to go!
