Ever had a fake friend? I did, and it all started on the first day of school. Frankie, her best friend Lola, and her boyfriend Calvin were excited to be sophomores together. After the 4th hour, when the big black clock finally rang, Frankie rushed to lunch, eager to catch up with Lola and Calvin. Lola had been grounded all summer, so they were thrilled to hang out again.
But just two weeks before winter break, Frankie got a shocking text about an Instagram post from Lola that made her question Calvin’s loyalty. Frankie confronted Calvin, and they realized Lola had lied. Calvin asked Lola directly, “Why do you want to turn everyone against me?” and her answer was filled with guilt.
As Frankie and Calvin spent time together, they couldn’t shake the frustration about Lola’s lies. They later learned from Lola’s mom that Lola had a medical issue she had been hiding. They were surprised and concerned, feeling a mix of emotions.
When they finally talked to Lola, she broke down and confessed she was dealing with mental health issues. She admitted her jealousy over Frankie and Calvin led her to lie. Frankie and Calvin felt sad for Lola and wished she had opened up sooner, but they were determined to support her through her struggles.
There is always a possibility that fake friends are going to be lingering, but you never know what someone is going through. Just like in the story when Lola is being what we call a “fake friend”, she was doing it out of sadness and anger, but even though all she really needed was a good friend. Together they promised to stay honest and always be there for each other.
